What Does Sclerotherapy Feel Like?

You may notice some discomfort such as stinging or cramping with sclerotherapy, but no more painful than a pinprick. This is temporary and lasts about one to two minutes. Bruising after treatment is normal and will go away quickly.

When Will I See Sclerotherapy Results?

As the treated blood vessels start to break down, you’ll start to see small changes. Full sclerotherapy results are usually visible within a few weeks, though it may take about a month. You may need multiple treatments for an optimal outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Sclerotherapy treats spider veins and small varicose veins, most often on the legs. A solution is injected into the vein, causing it to close and gradually fade.
Most patients need two to four sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on the number and size of veins being treated.
Most patients feel only a small pinch with each injection and mild cramping or stinging for a few seconds. No anesthesia is needed.
Wear compression stockings as directed, usually for one to two weeks. Walk daily, and avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths and sun exposure on treated areas for a few days.
Spider veins usually fade within three to six weeks after treatment. Larger veins can take three to four months to fully respond. Treated veins don’t come back, but new ones can form over time, so some patients schedule occasional touch-ups.
